Did You Hear About Morgan Ensberg in San Diego?

Archie Brown has been wanting a change at third base for the Houston Astros for several seasons. Morgan Ensberg has been so aggrivationg that Archie has called him Morgan Stinkin' Ensberg since before he was the goat in the World Series in 2005. His tendency to take called strikes was the source of the irritation. He was supposed to be a run producer. He got traded to San Diego this week and made his debut for the Padres today. He went 4 for 5 with 2 homeruns and 4 RBI.

That is a run producer!

Did You Hear About How Dry It Is In Abilene?

Archie Brown had grown up in a part of Texas that had woods and a bit of swamp and lots of vegetation. When he went to college in Abilene, he found himself in a whole other world. He had chosen to go there because a lot of his friends were going, and it was far enough from home that he would be on his own, away form constant oversight by his parents.

There were lots of things to like about the school and the experience. But when he had been there only a couple of weeks, he told his dad over the phone, “If you want under a tree out here, you have to crawl under it!”

Did You Hear About My Mile Run Progress?

Archie Brown has been challenged by his six year old grandson to run a mile with him. Archie has not run a mile in more than 30 years, but he wants to encourage his grandson to keep running, so he accepted the challenge. In about two weeks Archie has extended his distance from a couple of hundred yards to about three quarters of a mile. The race is scheduled for about a week from now, so Archie thinks at least he will be able to complete the mile. That will make him a winner even if the boy finishes ahead of him!

Did You Hear About The Bridge Collapse in Minnesota?

Archie Brown and his wife, Ronda, were saddened as they watched the news last night of the collapse of the bridge over the Mississippi River in Minneapolis. It was a such a busy time of day with traffic leaving the business district heading home, as well as the fans of the Twins heading into town for the game. Archie was surprised that the game went on, until he heard the reasoning of the DOT people, thinking that it was best to keep the fans off the roads at the moment till the emergency had settled a little and the best routes out of the city could be determined.

Did You Hear About The Tree In Our Front Yard?

Archie Brown has a big white oak tree in front of his house. It is probably older than me, and is at least two feet in diameter in the lower trunk. It has been beautiful and provided a lot of shade for his home.

About eighteen months ago it was struck by lightening. The Browns have monitored it closely since that night. They do not want to have it fall on the house. In the past few weeks they have seen the development of some vertical stress fractures in the trunk. Archie had done all the trimming he could do with his limited equipment, so he called a tree specialist to come do some professional work on the tree this week. He took off some of the low hanging limbs and gave the tree some balance in hopes that they can save the old beauty.

As Archie wondered Kane is the future of the Black Caucus and the NHL, he also wondered if there was a future for the NHL in Houston. There is already an arena, the Toyota Center. And Rockets owner, Les Alexander, has been pursuing a franchise. Arch would like to see it happen.

Did You Hear About Mike Coolbaugh?

Archie Brown read the sad, yet inspirational story of Mike Coolbaugh this morning in the paper. Mike was drafted in the 16th round of in 1990 and decided to go pro instead of go to college, because his dream was to be a professional baseball player.

Over the next 17 years my plate and several organizations and made to brief appearances in the major leagues. But he always seemed to be caught in the numbers are behind somebody that was a bigger star.

Please let not be capitalized and in 2005 season. Mike had a superior season going in AAA, at Round Rock. The Astros were in a push for the pennant that ultimately ended up in the World Series. That aside I would call up Coolbaugh for some added strength to the bench. But that might Mike got hit by pitch and his wrist was broken. So he missed his chance to enjoy a trip to the World Series.

This season he had decided not to play any longer in the minor leagues. He had gone to San Diego and begun to try to sell real estate. But just last month he had accepted a position coaching first base for the Tulsa Drillers, which is a minor league team for the Colorado Rockies. He was thrilled to be back in uniform and have a future in the game.

Then Sunday night in the ninth inning of a game in Little Rock, Arkansas, Mike was struck on the side of the head by a line drive. He collapsed and less than an hour later was pronounced dead. He leaves behind a wife, five-year-old and three-year-old boys, and a third child to be born in October.

Mike Coolbaugh was just 35 years old.

Did You Hear About Our Trip to Singapore?

Archie Brown and his wife, Ronda, are heading to Singapore in a few days. They are going to visit their daughter and to pick up their grandsons who have spent the summer over there. Archie went to get a few pairs of shorts yesterday. He doesn't wear shorts around in public at home very often, but it is so hot there and they will do a lot of walking, biking and being active that it makes sense to wear shorts over there. He will need to take some sun screen, because he has the whitest legs anywhere.

Arch bought some shorts by Starter that are designed to draw the moisture away from the body and keep one cool. They were on sale, so he bought four pairs. He sweats a lot.

Did You Hear About the Meeting in the Bar?

Archie Brown was just watching the news on the television on the NBC station in Houston. There was a report that is as strange as he had heard in a long time. A victim of a shooting four years ago. The shooter was convicted and sentenced to forty years. Yesterday he was sitting in a bar when his attacker came up to him and spoke to him. He called the police who found out that there had been a typographical error on the paperwork between the court and the prison. The sentence on the papers that arrived at the prison had left off a zero. So the man was released after 4 instead of 40 years.

The convict was picked up today and taken back to prison!
