Did You Hear About The Tree In Our Front Yard?

Archie Brown has a big white oak tree in front of his house. It is probably older than me, and is at least two feet in diameter in the lower trunk. It has been beautiful and provided a lot of shade for his home.

About eighteen months ago it was struck by lightening. The Browns have monitored it closely since that night. They do not want to have it fall on the house. In the past few weeks they have seen the development of some vertical stress fractures in the trunk. Archie had done all the trimming he could do with his limited equipment, so he called a tree specialist to come do some professional work on the tree this week. He took off some of the low hanging limbs and gave the tree some balance in hopes that they can save the old beauty.

Archie Brown want to see its first ever professional hockey game this past season. It was minor-league hockey in Houston. Archie enjoyed the speed and power of the game, and it what it is appetite to watch NHL games on television.

The recent NHL hockey draft took place with the Chicago Blackhawks taking right winger Patrick Kane as the first choice. As Archie wondered Kane is the future of the Black Caucus and the NHL, he also wondered if there was a future for the NHL in Houston. There is already an arena, the Toyota Center. And Rockets owner, Les Alexander, has been pursuing a franchise. Arch would like to see it happen.

Did You Hear About Mike Coolbaugh?

Archie Brown read the sad, yet inspirational story of Mike Coolbaugh this morning in the paper. Mike was drafted in the 16th round of in 1990 and decided to go pro instead of go to college, because his dream was to be a professional baseball player.

Over the next 17 years my plate and several organizations and made to brief appearances in the major leagues. But he always seemed to be caught in the numbers are behind somebody that was a bigger star.

Please let not be capitalized and in 2005 season. Mike had a superior season going in AAA, at Round Rock. The Astros were in a push for the pennant that ultimately ended up in the World Series. That aside I would call up Coolbaugh for some added strength to the bench. But that might Mike got hit by pitch and his wrist was broken. So he missed his chance to enjoy a trip to the World Series.

This season he had decided not to play any longer in the minor leagues. He had gone to San Diego and begun to try to sell real estate. But just last month he had accepted a position coaching first base for the Tulsa Drillers, which is a minor league team for the Colorado Rockies. He was thrilled to be back in uniform and have a future in the game.

Then Sunday night in the ninth inning of a game in Little Rock, Arkansas, Mike was struck on the side of the head by a line drive. He collapsed and less than an hour later was pronounced dead. He leaves behind a wife, five-year-old and three-year-old boys, and a third child to be born in October.

Mike Coolbaugh was just 35 years old.

Did You Hear About Our Trip to Singapore?

Archie Brown and his wife, Ronda, are heading to Singapore in a few days. They are going to visit their daughter and to pick up their grandsons who have spent the summer over there. Archie went to get a few pairs of shorts yesterday. He doesn't wear shorts around in public at home very often, but it is so hot there and they will do a lot of walking, biking and being active that it makes sense to wear shorts over there. He will need to take some sun screen, because he has the whitest legs anywhere.

Arch bought some shorts by Starter that are designed to draw the moisture away from the body and keep one cool. They were on sale, so he bought four pairs. He sweats a lot.

Did You Hear About the Meeting in the Bar?

Archie Brown was just watching the news on the television on the NBC station in Houston. There was a report that is as strange as he had heard in a long time. A victim of a shooting four years ago. The shooter was convicted and sentenced to forty years. Yesterday he was sitting in a bar when his attacker came up to him and spoke to him. He called the police who found out that there had been a typographical error on the paperwork between the court and the prison. The sentence on the papers that arrived at the prison had left off a zero. So the man was released after 4 instead of 40 years.

The convict was picked up today and taken back to prison!

Did You Hear About Drink My Daily Veggies?

Archie Brown is a about sixty pounds overweight. He has a degree in physical education, so it is not a matter of not knowing what it would take to lose the excess weight. The problem is that Archie does not like green and leafy vegetables that are a necessary part of a healthy diet and maintaining an acceptable weight for healthy living. But when Archie heard about a new alternative vegetable supplement called Drink My Daily Veggies, he was very intrigued. He knew that he would never commit to eating the daily vegetables required; he believed he could drink them without any great difficulty.

Lane Labs has company that specializes in daily supplements to aid a healthy diet. The company has recently released a top of the line nutritional supplement and is making thousands of free sample packets of the product. They hope that those who sample the product will realize not only the nutritional value of the supplement, but also any number of other benefits that the packets offer. The supplement packs would make great food for those on the go, as a healthy addition to a camping or backpacking trip, or for guys like Archie Brown, who know they need the veggies, but will not eat them.
