Caroling poem

At Christmas often sing a carol
of Jesus entering the world of peril.
In the manger the donkey ate his oats
as Mary wrapped the child in coats
of swaddling cloth she found in a barrel.
Returning home we get our hands toasted
and eat our chestnuts Dad has roasted.
At midnight we hear the bells' peel
and we think of the serpent under Christ's heel,
before off to dreamland we have coasted.
